Teaching Full Time
The spectrum within which teaching full time can take place is vast. Full time teachers work in nurseries, schools, colleges and universities. They work in vocational subjects, academic subjects and the arts. Full time teachers can choose to work with little ones, young adults, mature adults or the elderly. The teaching can take place in private and state funded institutions, mainstream and special needs schools and universities, day and boarding settings and prisons. The world is also your oyster as there are full time teaching opportunities in almost every corner of the globe…
In general terms, full-time school teachers must be available for work for 195 days each year and for a maximum of 1265 hours of directed time. In addition, they must work such additional hours as are necessary for the effective discharge of their duties, including in particular marking, preparation and writing reports on pupils. They must be qualified in their field and also have a teaching qualification.
In a university, as outlined in an example of a contract: “A Full-Time Faculty member is a field professional with quality academic credentials (Master's degree minimum) who is responsible for empowering and encouraging student learning by delivering high-quality educational courses and programs, fostering collegial pedagogical research and mentorship with other adjunct and/or part and full-time faculty, and providing constructive and significant support to administrative processes,
all in accordance with the University’s requirements.”
In either setting, teaching full time requires following a curriculum to design lessons and review them for educational and topic coverage, set and mark homework as a minimum. The lower down the age spectrum of schooling, the more responsibility a teacher will have for the care of the class. In early primary school years, the entire learning experience may be delivered by a single class teacher who covers every aspect of the curriculum with their class, providing the optimal learning environment.
Being a full time teacher in this environment will give you access to more responsibility in your job, thereby providing you with more control over the lessons you deliver. This may include things like choosing appropriate educational technology to engage students and enhance learning. In many ways, although the burden is greater than in the case of part time teaching, the control and potentially therefore, so is job satisfaction.
The best starting point in looking for the place for you to begin teaching full time is probably to register interest with an online job search service and look in the local press. In the UK, for example, there is a publication called the Times Educational Supplement (TES) which is a reputable job listings and career advice provision for the educational profession. They do have postings for positions worldwide so it is worth having a look at it online if you can. There are countless sites online which profess to be the best place to find a job. Have a look at them as some may specialise in your field of teaching or in your location. However, the best way to find a job may still be the old fashioned method of looking in the local paper.
